Letter ending a contract

What do you need to do to end a contract?  First of all dig out the agreement to check whether you can end it or not and what, if anything, you have to do to put this into effect. 

What sort of notice? 

Check the contract carefully to see how much notice you have to give. It may even be the case that as well as setting out how much notice is needed, there’s a window open for only a short period of time each year when you can do this. 

Check how the notice must be sent, to whom and where. A non-compliant notice may be invalid, so it’s important to get it right.  Unless the contract provides otherwise, a notice period normally runs from when the notice arrives or is deemed to be given, not when it’s sent. Calculate the time periods, therefore, with utmost care.
