Introduction to this document

Fire precautions - fire detection and warning systems

When carrying out a fire risk assessment, one important area to evaluate is whether there’s a good enough system for alerting occupants to a fire. Use our form to assess your building.

What’s included?

The document is designed to be used alongside other fire risk assessment forms which together will review all parts of your fire arrangements. It begins with space to describe the current system you have in place, whether it’s just shouting “fire”, a few smoke alarms, or a fully functioning electric fire alarm.

The second part of the form includes 13 questions which check aspects such as:

* whether there are sufficient detector heads, sounders and manual alarm call points

* if the alarm can be clearly heard throughout the building

* that beacons and pagers are used, where necessary

* the set-up, servicing and maintenance of the alarm system.
