Introduction to this document

Safety briefing - construction phase plans

This briefing describes the purpose and content of construction phase plans (CPP) and the associated legal responsibilities.

What’s covered?

The aim of this Safety Briefing - Construction Phase Plans is to tell anyone involved in construction work, particularly construction workers and inexperienced clients, why CPPs are required and what they contain.

What is a CPP?

The CPP is a document which sets out all the site safety management arrangements for construction work. For small projects this may be written through an app to produce an electronic document. More complex projects will include much more detailed information.

Who is responsible for the CPP?

Section three of our document explains that the contractor or principal contractor draws up the CPP. The client also has a duty to ensure that it is in place before work starts on site.

What must workers do?

The briefing explains that for most workers the only responsibility they have in relation to the CPP is to become familiar with the contents before they start work. In some cases, however, they may be asked to write one.

Key points

The key points remind those receiving the briefing of what the CPP contains, that it’s required for all construction work and that all workers must be familiar with the contents.
