Introduction to this document

Flow chart - method statements

A method statement describes how a job will be carried out safely and is often a prerequisite when working on a construction site or another employer’s premises. Our flow chart will help you to produce one.

Reducing the burden

Writing method statements tends to be carried out by certain staff. Delegating it is tricky because of the detailed explanation which would be required beforehand. To help with this procedure we have drawn up a Flow Chart - Method Statements. It shows how the document is developed, adapted and distributed, making it easier for those less familiar with the process to lend a hand.

Note. You’ll also find flow charts such as this one especially useful if you have a formal management standard, e.g. if you’re certificated to the international health and safety standard ISO 45001.

The flow chart begins at the point that the need for a method statement has been identified and ends with keeping a copy on file after the work is completed. In between we describe the journey taken in developing a good quality document and explain who to send it to.

The suggested contents are based on typical arrangements within organisations. You may need to amend them to suit your own circumstances.
