If you involve volunteers in your workplace, you must ensure that they can carry out their roles safely. Use our form to identify risks and document the controls you have in place to protect them.

Compliance

The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 protects employees and others who may be affected by work activities. This includes those volunteering for, or on behalf of, your organisation. You should provide the same level of protection to volunteers where they carry out similar activities and are exposed to the same level of risk as employees.

 

How does it work?

Our form focuses on protecting the health and safety of those volunteering by identifying their lack of experience of the tasks and knowledge of your business. However, you could expand this to assess other risks to your business such as theft, reputational damage etc.

 

When to use it

If you have volunteers undertaking regular duties this risk assessment can be completed and reviewed frequently.. If you are using volunteers for a one-off event, complete a new risk assessment each time.
